Last Sunday saw the very first Drake’s Island beach clean. A team comprising Saltram Rotary Club members and Plymouth Beach Clean landed on an autumn sun drenched island armed with black sacks and litter pickers expecting to find the usual mix of single use plastics and disposables.

Arriving at low tide enabled the group to stretch out across the entire beach areas around the north and west faces of the island but what they found wasn’t exactly crisp packets and plastic bottles. Amongst the haul were four large tyres, a commercial fishing net, a small outboard motor and a variety of small metal unidentified vehicle parts.

The beach clean was a great success and culminated with a very interesting and well deserved guided tour around the island with Morgan and we were particularly struck by one elderly Rotarian who emotionally exclaimed that in 79 years this was the first time that he had set foot on the island.

Not only do we look forward to many more visitors getting the chance to experience the island for themselves but also to beach cleans becoming a regular occurrence for the foreseeable future.
